Buddy Holly's microphone
"Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die"
~Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison, "That'll be the Day"
I’m a huge fan of Buddy Holly. There’s something honest, warm, heartfelt and powerfully authentic that resonates in the music from his short career. Many of his recordings were made at Norman Petty’s recording studio in Clovis, New Mexico, where I had the good fortune to make this picture of the microphone that Buddy used to record his extraordinary “That’ll be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Every Day” and so many other great tunes.
It could be said that a microphone is like a camera in its ability to capture moments (albeit aural) in real time. It was a gift to hold and photograph this historic relic that so perfectly captured the many incredible acoustic moments in the life of Buddy Holly and thus preserved their wonder.
